Short stretch compression bandage : a key tool in wound care and treatment

Short stretch compression bandages are used to set as the outer layer of multi-layer compressive bandaging therapy systems which are used in the treatment of lymphedema and edema. Short stretch bandages are made from cotton fibers which are interwoven in a way that allows only for approximately 80%extensibility of their original length. When used as part of a multi-layer compression bandage, the “short stretch” capacity of these bandages creates an external force against outward muscle contraction, (known as working pressure). Conversely, while the muscles are at rest, the pressure of the short stretch bandages is low, thereby eliminating constriction or a “tourniquet effect,” which would otherwise hinder the normal flow of body fluids.

Main application areas

1. Venous disease treatment
Short stretch compression bandage is often used to treat chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and venous ulcers. By providing a stable pressure gradient, it can improve venous return, reduce edema and promote ulcer healing.

2. Lymphedema management
In lymphedema treatment, SSCB can reduce lymph retention through mechanical pressure and maintain the shape of the treated limb.

Short stretch compression bandages have become an important tool for chronic venous disease, lymphedema and wound care due to their unique compression properties and wide applicability. When used correctly, they can not only effectively relieve symptoms, but also significantly improve the patient’s quality of life. However, to ensure the best effect, it is recommended that patients use this tool under the guidance of medical professionals.
